Methods for the identification of stainless steel

Classification of stainless steel

1. According to the state of organization: martensitic steel, ferrite steel, austenitic steel, austenite-ferrite (duplex) stainless steel and precipitation hardening stainless steel, etc.

2. According to composition: chromium stainless steel, chromium nickel stainless steel and chromium manganese nitrogen stainless steel.

Identification method

Physical identification of stainless steel

1. Color: after pickling stainless steel, the surface color of silver white and clean, chromium nickel stainless steel, chromium stainless steel, chromium manganese nitrogen stainless steel without pickling, chromium nickel steel is brown white, chromium steel is brown black, chromium manganese nitrogen steel is black. Stainless steel in addition to steel, pickling is generally white.

2. Magnet: can basically distinguish between two kinds of stainless steel, chromium stainless steel in any state can be magnet attraction, chromium nickel stainless steel in the annealing state is generally non-magnetic, after cold processing, some will have magnetic, but high manganese steel is non-magnetic; The magnetic situation of chromium nickel nitrogen stainless steel is more complex, some non-magnetic, some magnetic, some longitudinal non-magnetic and transverse magnetic. Therefore, although the magnet can basically distinguish chromium stainless steel and chromium nickel stainless steel, but can not correctly distinguish some special properties of steel, more can not distinguish specific steel.

3. Copper sulfate: remove the oxide layer of steel, put a drop of water, wipe with copper sulfate, if not discolored, generally is stainless steel, if it becomes purple, no magnetic is high manganese steel, magnetic is generally ordinary steel or low alloy steel.

Identification of special stainless steels

1. Grinding identification: put the stainless steel on the grinder to see how the spark. If the sparks appear to be linear and dense, it is a high manganese steel or manganese nitrogen steel. If there is no knot proof for stainless steel.

2. Annealing identification: generally after cold processing of chromium-nickel stainless steel, itself will be magnetic, can be used in small pieces in the fire, when all burning red and then let it cool, under normal circumstances, after annealing magnetic will disappear. But some chromium-nickel stainless steels, because of the addition of iron, are still magnetic even in the hot state.

3. Chemical qualitative method: dissolve a small piece of stainless steel in aqua regia, add ammonia to neutralize it, and gently inject nickel reagent. If the liquid surface appears red velvet material, the stainless steel contains nickel; If there is no red material, there is no nickel.
